CJ Tub Bottom Rust Repairs | Jeep CJ7 | Project Rowdy Ep053
The bottom of this Jeep CJ7's Tub needs a lot of Rust Repair. In this video, I cut out and replace several bad areas as well as fabricate some several new body mount captured nuts.
I have assembled a complete list of parts and many of the tools that I used during this rebuild in an Amazon Affiliate Store page which can be found at the following link: www.amazon.com/shop/influencer-8c6a35f2
All of this is being done to prepare this Tub to be reinstalled in my 1979 Jeep CJ7 which is slated to for an LS LM7 5.3L Engine swap.
Project Rowdy is a restoration on a 1979 Jeep CJ7 V8 Golden Eagle.

    Rowdy, I am going to install my one piece axles this week and can you answer a question for me? When you are loading the axle I noticed you had the spacer pulled back out. Were you able to do this without damaging the seal and how is the best way to keep from damaging the seal? I definitely want to check my clearances before install. THANKS

    • @UCanDoIt2Mike
      @UCanDoIt2Mike 19 дней назад

      @@matt82654 Just after I confirmed that the spacer/race/bearing protrudes the house between the spec (0.020-0.080), at location 8:50 in the video, I only removed the Bearing. I left the Spacer and Seal in the housing. When I assembled the axle, what you see on the table (9:22) is the Bearing and Press Ring. The Press Ring is additional insurance that the Bearing stays attached n its place and the axle does not slide out after installation. Do not install the seal when checking the initial clearance. In the event that you do need to narrow the width of the spacer, the spacer will need to be removed and you will damage the seal.

      I can tell by the way you setup and asked your question that you do have a great understanding of how this works. Hi Rowdy, I am doing a complete rebuild on my 1978 Jeep CJ5. First, THANK YOU for your videos they have been beyond helpful. A question if you have time. My rear drum backing plates have an unusal emergancy brake cable mounting system. Most of the videos I watch the emergency cable just plugs into a hole. Then to the lever mechanism. Of course not mine, I have a mounting bracket on the new cable I have bought and then a rubber washer and a outside mounting bracket formed around the cable. Do you have any experience on where I might find the rubber washer and out side bracket. SOme how I have misplaced one of them. I would like to use new products if I can find them.

My 1979 AMC 20 Drum Backing Plates, had a square hole in the plate where the emergency cable would penetrate. The emergency cable housing had a square rubber end that would snap into that square hole. The cable would then protrude into the drum assemble and connect to a lever. Companies that you could contact for some help would include: Quadratec, Crown, and Omix-Ada. Hope this helps. Mike

      You need to study the implementation of "Shims". I believe in this case, for the Output Shaft Shims.... The "More" shims you use, the further apart you are restricting the bearing from closing in on each other. I believe you need to add shims. Mike

      Found the problem was not the shims in the end but the bottom bearing for some bizarre reason was not seated 100%. 👍🏻

      This is not a job for everyone. I enjoyed it as I learned how it is all done and enjoyed that process. This type of work would never interest me as a career. But there are guys out there that really love it. There is room to mess it up, so I would recommend getting a recommendation or looking for reviews of the shop you plan to engage with. Cheers! Mike

Then hit it with 220 grit where you blasted it if you can ...flat surfaces anyway. Enamel reducer again then spray coating. Think im going all the way with Eastwood products . Thanks Mike and good luck .

    I owned an "80 CJ7, a '91 YJ, a '98 TJ now a '18 JLU. This brought back many memories. The '91 had many little improvements that Chrysler after buying Jeep had been factory installed. First was a seal on the firewall where you found the water leak from the missing seam seal. Also this gasket served two purposes, first it sealed the seam but also, as a cushion as the hinge pins for the hood would wear out causing the hood to be metal on metal contact. On old CJ's most people would place a split garden hose under the hinge at this area to stop the noise. (Cowl Seal, Hood to Cowl OE Reference: 55008119) The second item was an inner fender splash shield that was located at the rear of the inner fender to close the gap to the firewall (jeep yj fender splash shield 5501 0838) They also had Rear Corner Body Splash Guard to keep the road spray from going into the two rear corners. All these on my '80 jeep had been created out of aluminum and riveted into place by the previous owner. In the drivers rear corner was a check valve in the gas tank vent line to prevent leakage if you tipped over and the splash shields protected this area. Can't wait to see the finished CJ!!! Thanks for the memories.

      Thanks for sharing that information. I believe my drivers rear had a little shield that I took off and had no ideas what or why it was there. in that same area was the a Roll-over valve like you mentioned. These are really fun and somewhat simple vehicles. Love the fact that you have made all of the upgrades to new models. Cheers.... Mike

    Man going back and reviewing this stuff after not working on my jeep for a long time brings it all back. I was thinking that blower motor was the same as either the Chevy Vega or non-A/C late 70's Chevy trucks. I had both in the past but memory is a little fuzzy now. I've had problems with replacement heater core not being a drop in fit too. Having the hood, dash and windshield off sure helps! This is excellent work and I will probably refer back when I start on mine again.

    This just came across my feed. Interesting to watch others work on old jeeps too. I had to replace my rear crossmember when I got my jeep 20ish years ago but I did it on the vehicle. Then fabbed some heavy L-brackets to put in behind the new bumper.
